The Mothers of Invention

Absolutely Free
1967

Zappa was one of those geniuses who could achieve challenging, mind-bending psychedelia without ever taking psychedelics.  (Beethoven was another.)  His outspoken defense of freedom and unfettered intellect are, to this day, an inspiration around the world.

Personal:  I saw Zappa in Cincinnati with my Older, Taller and Darker Brother.  We didn't know about Flo & Eddie yet, so we spent the whole show nudging each other and saying, "Hey, he looks just like the fat guy from the Turtles!"  Imagine the effect it had when they closed the show with Happy Together.

Oh, and did Call Any Vegetable for an encore.  Probably the most impressive show closer I have ever seen, and I've seen a couple. (See Tull)
