Anecdote #35
I hadn't been in college very long--I was only 44 years old. Internet research was still new and interesting to me, and I wasn't too familiar with the curriculum. So, I was fascinated when I walked past a student in the open lab, looked at the monitor in front of him, and saw scenes from my youth. Lyndon Johnson...the SDS...the Chicago convention...anti-war demonstrations...the Yippies...
What a great class that must be! I thought. I tried to imagine: Protest In America, Problems in Democracy, or perhaps Advanced Political Science?
I had to ask. "Hey, what class is that for?"
Casually, he answered, "American History."
History! I began to feel like it was time to find my walker and hobble off to the nursing home...History!
That can't be History, I lived through that!
Yes, we lived through history, and quite a history it was. We
watched America lose a war, one President and Vice-President lose their jobs and
another lose his life, and a "Negro" preacher lead his people
steadfastly
toward freedom. (We didn't know that he was bringing all the rest of us
along.)
So, was the music background for the history, or the history background for the
music? In any case, here's a quick look at the history of the Psychedelic
Sixties...
